The WX300 series splitters are compatible with a Category I Quick-Hitch. However John Deere iMatch hitches may require bushings on the pins, which are available from John Deere dealers. In some circumstances, the hoses may need to be extended in order to reach the tractor’s hydraulic couplers.

The frames of models not equipped with the Log Lifter do not have the required mounts or strength to fit a log lifter.

There are 4 main choices to consider:

1) TYPE: Do you require an engine-powered model or would you prefer to power it off your tractor or skidsteer?

2) POWER: Most wood can be split by a 20-ton splitter. However, hardwoods with gnarled, twisted grains, such as those that often grow up along a fence line may require a splitter with 30 tons of split force.

3) ORIENTATION: Vertical 3-point hitch models, inverted skidsteer models and horizontal-vertical woodsplitters are very helpful when the wood being split is too large or heavy to lift onto a log bed. The Log Lifter fitted to some of the WX900 series models is also helpful in this regard.

4) SPLIT LENGTH: Do you require 24”, 36” or 48” lengths of split wood? If you are interested in a trailer model, consider how much wood you intend to spilt, is it for commercial or rental use, does towed equipment require lights and licensing where you live. If available in your chosen model, a “T”, or Tall version of the splitter can raise the working height to a more comfortable level. The horizontal / vertical splitters can also help in this regard.

Three-point hitch and skidsteer models are more economical to purchase, operate and maintain. They are easier to transport around a property and through a bushlot. Their disadvantage is that they require a tractor or skidsteer to operate them.

Trailer models are easier to transport from site to site. Their disadvantage is that they are more costly to purchase, operate and maintain due to the engine, pump, tires, and lights (if equipped).

The splitter will still operate with enough pressure to split wood, but it will operate much slower. For example, if your tractor has half of our minimum required flow rate (gpm), the splitter will take twice the amount of time to run full cycle. The W4180 PTO pump kit is then your best option.

The W4180 Pump Kit consists of a pump mounted to a speed-up gearbox coupled to the tractor’s PTO output shaft. A hydraulic tank bolts into the splitter frame, with a suction hose and all necessary fittings and hardware. The gearbox speeds the pump rotation up enough to put out 12 gpm at 540 PTO rpm.

The "WE" series is our Economy line. It is intended for occasional use such as a cottage or home. The engine is a homeowner grade Honda GC version with a vertical shaft and a fixed throttle.

The "WX" series is our Heavy-Duty line, suitable for commercial, rental or constant use. The engines are commercial grade Honda GX versions. The frames use a heavier dual-rail construction.

There are 2 types of hydraulic systems used on tractors – open center and closed center. The difference between the WX300 and WX300C models is based on the type of the hydraulic system on the tractor.

If your tractor has an open-center hydraulic system, then you require a regular WX300 model splitter. If your tractor has a closed-center hydraulic system, then you require a WX300C model.

The splitter will not work properly if fitted otherwise. The tractor owner’s manual or your dealer can tell you which type of hydraulic system the tractor has.

The Log Lifter is rated at 750 pounds (340 kilograms).

The trailer splitters are narrow, light and do not have a suspension system. Therefore they bounce when being towed, particularly on rough roads. Because of this, we recommend a maximum tow speed of 50 mph (80 km/h).

 

We do not recommend using horizontal splitters in the vertical position.

We do not recommend the modifications required to use these models in the upright position.
